The Colours of History is my first attempt at painting after a long hiatus following Colour on Paper. The aim of this creative cycle is to approach and engage with historical events in an abstractive, intuitive way through a mixture of media and techniques.
For Queen and Country was inspired by the tragic events in Woolwich. I wanted to explore the boundaries of patriotism and pacifism and the contested role of symbols. My starting points – the two ends of the spectrum on which For Queen and Country exists – were Steve McQueen’s Queen and Country artwork and David Gentleman‘s iconic posters for the Stop the War campaign.
